Drukpa Tsheshi, observed on July 21 of this year, commemorates the day on which Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon following his enlightenment. According to the Tibetan calendar, today is the fourth day of the sixth lunar year. The sermon is known as The Setting of the Wheel of Dharma in Motion in Buddhism. Buddha articulated the Four Noble Truths that he had discovered through enlightenment. This was done so that his disciples and adherents may also find salvation. This day is observed by Buddhists in Bhutan, Tibet, and Sikkim by chanting prayers and conducting a yak race.

The background of Drukpa Tsheshi

Buddha delivered his first sermon in a deer forest in Sarnath, a village near the sacred city of Banaras, where he preached for the first time. This occurred over 2,500 years ago! On the fourth day of the sixth lunar month, it is believed he presented and explained the Four Noble Truths to his disciples. These truths account for suffering. To put it simply, existence begins with suffering. Then you discover the source of your pain, followed by the realisation that it can end. You have finally begun the journey that will end your suffering. At the conclusion of the path, one attains enlightenment.

This day is primarily observed by Bhutanese and Sikkimese people in India. To commemorate this sacrosanct occasion, individuals don traditional garb and attend monastic prayers. The grand celebrations attract devotees and pilgrims from all over the globe to Sikkim and Bhutan. In monasteries, you may encounter monks, travellers, and locals meditating. Buddhists consider meditation a way of life, and they believe it ultimately leads to salvation.
