According to legend, during the upheaval of Kshirsagar, Lord Vishnu in his incarnation as Kurma carried the Mandar mountain on his armour. Thus, with the assistance of Lord Vishnu, Mandar Parvat, and a serpent named Vasuki, the Devas and Asuras obtained fourteen jewels by churning the ocean.
