If there is one thing that we at National Today are absolute suckers for, it is a black forest cake, so you can guarantee that we are incredibly excited for March 28, when we will celebrate National Black Forest Day. First and foremost, the absolute magnificence of the cake itself merits praise, such as its chocolate shavings, maraschino cherries, and white cream! Don’t get us started on the flavor, or else we’ll be here all day. Cake was initially a straightforward dessert consisting of cream, cherries, chocolate, and alcohol. That still sounds delicious to us.

The background of National Black Forest Cake Day

There are numerous contradictory historical accounts regarding the origins of the black forest cake, but all attest to its deliciousness. Some historians believe that the cake was devised in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, in the sixteenth century. Not only was the time and place renowned for its Romantic era, but it was also one of the first locations where chocolate began to be used in dessert creations. Baden-Württemberg was renowned for its sour cherries and kirschwasser, a cherry liquor. It is believed that the alcohol gives the black forest cake its appellation. Black Forest is referred to as Schwarzwald in German, and a black forest cake is called Schwarzwalder Kirsch.

According to another account, Josef Keller, a pastry chef at Caf Arend in Bad Godesberg, devised the cake in 1915. However, it did not become widespread until the 1930s. Intriguingly, another historian asserts that Erwin Hildenbrand, the master patissier, invented the recipe in 1930. Hildenbrand was employed in various regions of the German Black Forest.

Today, variations of the cake are enjoyed in many regions of the globe. In countries such as Austria and Germany, a black forest cake cannot be regarded authentic unless it contains alcohol.

5 MARASCHINO CHERRY FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

During the bleaching and brining procedures, maraschino cherries lose many of their nutrients, and they are also high in sugar.

The bright red colouring used in maraschino cherries contains benzidine, a carcinogen that can induce bladder cancer.

In the early 1900s, these cherries were considered luxurious because they were designated for fine dining.

In 1919, Dr. E. H. Weigand modified the maraschino cherry formulation by substituting a brining process for the traditional alcohol method.

While red is one of the most popular colors, maraschino cherries are also available in gold, green, blue, yellow, etc.
