Yohai was the president of his father’s New York-based company, Old London Foods, located in the Bronx. After a series of food inventions, the company decided to create another product using animal feed made from cornmeal. In 1948, their machines unintentionally subjected this cornmeal to high pressure, resulting in a cylindrical shape.
Adding to this process, Old London Foods began baking various cheese flavours before discovering the optimal combination. Cheese Doodlez were then introduced to the market and became a delectable success. Cheetos, the other cheese snack brand, gained national distribution and a wider market appeal, thereby overshadowing its competitor.
In 1965, the Borden Condensed Milk Company acquired Old London Foods’ Cheez Doodle Company. Cheez Doodle was eventually assigned to the snack food company Wise, which Borden later acquired. In the late 1960s, Wise created Crunchy Cheez Doodles because people could not get enough of the snack. They enjoyed the shape and flavour, and did not mind that their fingers were covered in cheese dust. It simply meant they could enjoy more of that cheesy flavour.
Today, cheese doodles are regarded as one of the most well-liked snacks, and their variety of flavours is cherished. They are part of the standard assortment of party snacks, as well as ingredients for other dishes. Cheese doodles, like their accidental creation, have taken on a life of their own.
