On May 23, we observe National Taffy Day, our favourite sweet and chewy confection. Taffy has a lengthy history as a native American candy. According to urban legend, a Jersey Shore candy store was flooded in the 1880s, soaking its stock of taffy with Atlantic salt water. On a whim, the proprietor marketed the confection as “saltwater taffy”; thus, an American delicacy was created! Today, it is sold on boardwalks all along the Eastern seaboard of the United States, as well as in landlocked confectionery stores. National Taffy Day is a day to enjoy the delicious pastime of unwrapping the twisty wax paper and biting into a chewy piece of taffy. Yum!
