On May 23, we observe National Taffy Day, our favourite sweet and chewy confection. Taffy has a lengthy history as a native American candy. According to urban legend, a Jersey Shore candy store was flooded in the 1880s, soaking its stock of taffy with Atlantic salt water. On a whim, the proprietor marketed the confection as “saltwater taffy”; thus, an American delicacy was created! Today, it is sold on boardwalks all along the Eastern seaboard of the United States, as well as in landlocked confectionery stores. National Taffy Day is a day to enjoy the delicious pastime of unwrapping the twisty wax paper and biting into a chewy piece of taffy. Yum!

Observing taffy being manufactured is a must! The majority of taffy factories offer guided excursions so that visitors can observe how taffy is heated in enormous copper kettles, cooled slowly by hand on cold marble slabs and then placed on a machine that performs the pulling.
National Taffy Day may not be the ideal time to indulge in sweets, but it is common practise for other holidays (not naming names)… Thus, consuming a few taffies is an excellent method to celebrate.
The ideal way to observe National Taffy Day is by making your own. Not only is this an enjoyable activity, but it will also provide you with an abundance of chew to share with friends and family. Consult a web-based recipe and begin cooking (and tugging).
