By the late 1600s, gin was considered a suitable substitute for brandy in England. In the 1720s, approximately one-fourth of London’s households were generating their own gin. This period became known as the Gin Craze, during which the British Parliament attempted to enact a series of laws to limit the widespread consumption of gin.
