Early in the 19th century, Swedish physician Per Henrik Ling reintroduced massage therapy to the mainstream by devising Swedish Movement Cure, a treatment for chronic pain. In the 19th century, the Dutchman Johan George Mezger incorporated techniques such as effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, and friction into massage. In the late 1800s, the terms masseur and masseuse gained popularity, and full-body massage became a popular remedy for melancholy in late 1800s females’ society.
