International ASMR Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Who wouldn't enjoy receiving a scalp or epidermis massage? The sensation is exhilarating and euphoric. But not everyone has the time or resources to receive these incredible shivers from another person or professional.

On April 9, we celebrate International A.S.M.R. Day. It is an annual event to recognise the extraordinary benefits of A.S.M.R. and raise awareness about it. ASMR is an acronym for “autonomous sensory meridian response.” It is a sensory reaction to specific visual and auditory stimuli. People typically characterise it as tickles caused by someone running their fingertips through their hair. A.S.M.R. has gone viral on social media and YouTube. Every day, millions of pieces of content are produced, and a growing number of individuals enjoy it. However, it is a relatively novel field of study, and little scientific research has been conducted in this area.

The background of International ASMR Day

Who wouldn’t enjoy receiving a scalp or epidermis massage? The sensation is exhilarating and euphoric. But not everyone has the time or resources to receive these incredible shivers from another person or professional. What if, however, such stimulation could also be accomplished through tranquil sights and sounds? People refer to this feeling as fluttering. A.S.M.R. is the term used to characterise these tingling sensations induced by audio and visual stimuli that can induce feelings of euphoria and deep relaxation. A.S.M.R. is subjective and can be highly effective on certain individuals, causing them to fall unconscious frequently.

The official beginning of A.S.M.R. occurred on October 19, 2007. It all began when a user with the username “okay whatever” submitted an inquiry to Steady Health. Steady health is an online forum for discussing health-related topics. In the query, he or she compared the experience of certain sensations to running fingers along the skin or hair. However, the sensation is achieved through non-haptic events, such as listening to a story or viewing a puppet show. People responded to the post with similar responses, and websites soon facilitated the conversation further. YouTube currently hosts millions of A.S.M.R.-related recordings.

There is no scientific research regarding the evolutionary basis for A.S.M.R. The general consensus, however, is that it can be triggered by a tender physical touch, analogous to having one’s hair cut or combed. This has led to the hypothesis that social hygiene practises may be associated with A.S.M.R.
