Every first Tuesday in April, we observe SAAM Day of Action; this year, it will occur on April 4. As part of the larger Sexual Assault Awareness Month (S.A.A.M. ), this special Day of Action seeks to raise awareness about sexual assault and educate people about effective ways to prevent it. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (N.S.V.R.C.) selects the annual theme for SAAM Day of Action and organises events aimed at education and awareness of sexual violence. Reflecting the world’s expanding reliance on technology, the themes of recent years have centred on the prevention of sexual assault in online spaces.
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) began observing SAAM Day of Action in 2004. “To provide leadership in preventing and responding to sexual violence by collaborating, sharing and creating resources, and promoting research.” Their vision is “A world where diversity is celebrated and all people are treated with dignity and respect and have complete autonomy over their bodies and sexual expression.”
The goal of the SAAM Day of Action is to prevent sexual assault, abuse, and harassment, as well as provide support for survivors. Sexual assault refers to any form of sexual activity or contact that occurs without consent. Sexual assault is exemplified by rape, attempted rape, sexual coercion, unwanted contact or fondling, etc. It also includes non-physical acts such as displaying explicit images to a person without their consent. Sexual assault is a heinous offence that must be punished.
It frequently has devastating long-term effects on survivors, including anger, denial, nightmares, shame, dread, depression, guilt, rationalization, mood swings, numbness, promiscuity, loneliness, social anxiety, and a lack of trust. In contrast to censure, stigmatization, and victim-blaming, survivors of sexual assault should receive support and compassion. In addition, they require therapy and counselling in order to receive the necessary treatment and rehabilitation.
