World COPD Day 2023: Date, History, 5 Facts About C.O.P.D.

It affected approximately 3.5 million Americans in 2016, with individuals aged 45 and older comprising more than 90% of cases.

World COPD Day 2023: Annual observance of World C.O.P.D. Day occurs on the third Wednesday of November. It is observed this year on November 15. Progressive chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.) is a form of lung disease that is preventable and treatable. The presence of ongoing respiratory symptoms and airway obstruction distinguish it. Coughing and shortness of breath are its primary symptoms, with chronic sputum production being a possibility.

As this progressive disease progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to perform daily tasks such as dressing or walking. C.O.P.D. is predominantly caused by the inhalation of tobacco smoke and other hazardous gases and particulate. Inadequate Alpha-1 antitrypsin, advanced age, and genetics are additional factors.

World COPD Day 2023: History

In the past, physicians who presumably diagnosed C.O.P.D. utilized a variety of terminologies. Théophile Bonet, a Swiss physician, coined the term “voluminous lungs” in 1679. Giovanni Morgagni, an Italian anatomist, documented 19 instances of “turgid” lungs in 1769. Chronic bronchitis was initially recognized as a debilitating medical condition and a component of COPD by the British physician Charles Badham in 1814. He initially coined the term “catarrh” to denote the persistent cough and copious production of mucous that characterize chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Physician and inventor of the stethoscope René Lanniec identified emphysema as an additional component of C.O.P.D. in 1821. Due to the fact that smoking was uncommon in the early 1800s, he concluded that genetic factors and air pollution were the primary causes of C.O.P.D. John Hutchinson invented the spirometer in 1846; it continues to be an indispensable instrument in the diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The term “chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder” was initially proposed by Dr. William Briscoe during the 9th Aspen Emphysema Conference in June 1965.

C.O.P.D. was first associated with smoking in 1976, when physician Charles Fletcher published “The Natural History of Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema.” It was determined by him and his colleagues that quitting smoking could actually impede the progression of C.O.P.D. Historically, exercise, steroid treatment, and oxygen therapy were regarded as hazardous for individuals with COPD. Early in the 1960s, inhalers and mechanical ventilators were introduced. Additionally, residential care and pulmonary rehabilitation were introduced during the ninth Aspen Emphysema Conference. At present, these methods of long-term oxygen therapy are the only treatments recognized to alter the progression of C.O.P.D.

Medication use to treat C.O.P.D. symptoms and restore pulmonary function increased during the 1990s. The advancement of C.O.P.D. education resulted in the prioritization of clean air awareness and smoking cessation as central components of self-care interventions.

Diet and physical activity are emphasized by medical professionals as essential components of a C.O.P.D. rehabilitation program.

5 Facts About C.O.P.D.

Prolonged Bronchitis

In 2016, more than 8.9 million Americans were infected, with nearly 75% of cases involving individuals aged 45 and older.

Pneumonia emphysema

It affected approximately 3.5 million Americans in 2016, with individuals aged 45 and older comprising more than 90% of cases.

More women are affected by C.O.P.D.

In the United States, women are particularly susceptible to developing C.O.P.D. before the age of 65, when the incidence is 37% higher than that of males.

Secondhand smokers are also susceptible.

It is feasible given sufficient intensity and duration of the contact.

Existing therapies are incapable of repairing damaged lungs.

Certain remedies, however, may mitigate the likelihood of flare-ups.
