Hug a Shed and Take a Selfie Day 2023: Date, History, Items, Activities

Hug A Shed And Take A Selfie Day is observed annually on May 5. A day to celebrate one of the most versatile structures in the world: the shed. Typically situated in the backyard or garden, these unassuming structures with a single-story roof serve a variety of purposes. Boat sheds, auto sheds, tool sheds, and wood sheds are just a few of the many purposes for which people have utilised sheds. Large or small, ancient or new, these utilitarian structures are among the most widespread structures on the planet.

The Background of Hug A Shed And Take A Selfie Day

Our earliest progenitors constructed their homes and outbuildings using whatever native materials were available in the area. To store grain, the Egyptians constructed underground silos enclosed with reeds. Europeans constructed their homes from mammoth skins and antlers. Eskimos constructed igloos from ice and snow slabs. Cave dwellers utilised smaller alcoves as storage space within caverns. The Anasazi people inhabited the American Southwest between the years 1 and 1300 A.D.

They inhabited both natural and man-made caverns carved from soft volcanic rock and utilised alcoves within them for storage. As freestanding shelters emerged, they expanded their cave dwellings by constructing living, storage, and religious areas out of rock and clay. In Southern Italy, archaeologists discovered the collapsed remains of an ancient shed’s roof on an accumulation of timber used to construct furniture. The fragments were determined to be made of maple, olive, willow, and poplar wood. The use of maple wood in the construction of fine furniture during Roman times indicates that the storage building was part of a workshop that produced furniture for wealthy clients.

Similarly to their Roman counterparts, wealthy English aristocrats were able to construct additional structures in addition to their primary residence. Those who had completed the Grand Tour of the continent in the 17th century desired to recreate the ancient monuments and ruins they observed in their own backyards. Most were as extravagant as their own residences, but they served no purpose other than to appear fabulous. This is possibly why these extravagant structures were known as ‘English Follies.’

No longer must one be wealthy to own a carport. You only need space in your backyard for one. Sheds, whether large or small, old or new, are a convenient place to conceal clutter, store items, or even retreat to.
