Invite an Alien to Live with You Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The premiere episode of the American sitcom "Mork & Mindy" broadcast on ABC on September 14, 1978. It was conceived as a spin-off after a particularly successful episode of the sitcom "Happy Days."

Invite An Alien To Live With You Day is observed annually on July 21 to honour the four-year run of the “Mork & Mindy” television series starring Pam Dawber and Robin Williams. Mork, portrayed by Williams, is an alien from the planet Ork on a mission to Earth to observe human behaviour. Mork travels to 1970s Boulder, Colorado after the landing of his egg-shaped spacecraft. Here, he encounters Mindy, a young journalism graduate portrayed by Dawber who allows him to live in her home.

The episodes revolve around Williams’ humorous portrayal of an alien attempting to understand Earth culture, as well as his frequent transmissions to his home planet.

The background of Invite an Alien to Live with You Day

The premiere episode of the American sitcom “Mork & Mindy” broadcast on ABC on September 14, 1978. It was conceived as a spin-off after a particularly successful episode of the sitcom “Happy Days.”

In February 1978, the “Happy Days” episode “My Favourite Orkan” from the fifth season parodies the 1960s sitcom “My Favourite Martian.” This was around the time that “Star Wars” was released, and the programme wanted to feature a spaceman to capitalise on the film’s immense popularity, which continues to this day.

Mork, played by Robin Williams, attempts to transport Richie Cunningham back to his home planet Ork as a specimen, but Fonzie prevents him. When Mork became so popular, the episode was reedited to depict Mork performing a memory wipeout and erasing the event from everyone’s memory.

Williams, who was unidentified at the time, drew praise and attention for his performance as the alien Mork. The now-iconic actor immediately wowed producers and audiences with his undeniable comic talent.

When instructed to take a seat during his audition, Williams reportedly sat on his head, prompting producer Garry Marshall to cast him on the spot. Williams was the only alien who auditioned, according to Marshall’s later statement.

Typical plots focus on Mork’s attempts to comprehend human behaviour and American culture, while Mindy assists him in adjusting to life on Earth.

5 “MORK & MINDY” FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

The residence of Mork and Mindy in the television series exists in Boulder, Colorado, and is now a popular tourist destination.

When the actress made an appearance on Williams’ programme “The Crazy Ones” in 2014, fans of the Williams-Dawber pairing were in for a treat.

The fourth season concludes with the pair stuck in prehistoric times due to their time-traveling shoes. The fifth season was intended to include an educational component, with the characters using the shoes to meet significant historical figures.

Williams learned that the programme had been cancelled from an article in “Variety.”

Although “Mork & Mindy” is a derivation of “Happy Days,” the character on “Happy Days” was inspired by an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show entitled “It May Look Like a Walnut.”
