Orlando Police Identify Woman Fatally Shot after Knife Charge: Police in Orlando have revealed the identity of a woman who tragically died in an encounter with officers last week. 32-year-old Rachael Ellis was mortally shot on Pioneers Way, off Narcoosee Road, south of State Road 417.
According to authorities, the incident occurred when officers responded to a distressing 911 call from a male who reported that his girlfriend was suicidal and in possession of a knife.
A crisis negotiation team contacted Ellis via telephone upon arrival. However, the conversation ended abruptly when she hung up the phone. Subsequently, Ellis exited the apartment with a knife, re-entered and exited again with a second knife. She charged at the officers while ignoring commands to stop.
Two officers who had received crisis intervention training deployed their firearms in response to the imminent threat, striking Ellis. She was tragically pronounced dead at the site.
The Orlando Police Department has withheld the identities of the involved officers in accordance with Marsy’s Law. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
