The background of National Splurge Day

According to historians, trade and commerce presumably existed since the beginning of human history. People began by exchanging cattle and livestock via the barter system. Years later, as currency developed around the globe, this evolved into money.

The history of purchasing and spending in America has also undergone dramatic transformations. Pioneers initiated the practise of purchasing locally by frequenting nearby general stores. By the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the United States was filled with mom-and-pop shops. These were succeeded a decade later by the major department stores. Agriculture was supplanted by manufacturing and industry as America’s business and economic sectors shifted dramatically in the twentieth century. This change increased employment opportunities, putting more money in the hands of individuals. Obviously, more money allowed individuals to spend more. Customers with newly acquired affluence propelled department stores into the stratosphere; these establishments sold more than ‘items,’ they sold a lifestyle. The second half of the nineteenth century also saw the introduction of a novel purchasing experience: the mall. While the concept of people visiting multiple vendors in a single location had been around for a long time — the Ancient Greeks developed marketplaces called ‘agoras’ — the first mall as we know it emerged in this era. The growth of the automobile industry also contributed to the development of shopping malls; the more cars people could purchase, the simpler it was for them to travel to these malls. The advent of e-commerce marked a turning point in purchasing history. As internet access increased, so did the number of individuals making online purchases. Multiple firms can now sell their products directly on social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram, following the e-commerce trend.

More than two decades ago, Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith, a native of Chicago, decided she had had enough of traditional festivities. Since she founded more than 1,900 distinct holidays, she dubbed herself “America’s Premier Eventologist” and came up with the idea for a lavish, one-of-a-kind holiday called National Splurge Day, which we have been celebrating ever since.
