However, oddballs have not always been celebrated or even acknowledged by society. Consider Salem’s witch trials. A one-year-long event is still being discussed to this day. During these trials, many individuals suspected of practising witchcraft were found guilty and executed. Oftentimes, even the tiniest deviation from the norm is fatally scrutinised. Throughout history, society has not always been kind to individuals whose behaviour deviated from the norm.
It wasn’t until the year 2000 that a handful of Austin, Texas, residents decided that we should celebrate our collective strangeness. The original name of the day was Keep Austin Weird, but it was ultimately changed. The day was originally sponsored by Tom Roy, but today many individuals commemorate it independently. Wonderful Weirdos Day is neither an official celebration nor a holiday, but people celebrate it enthusiastically because it is a day when we all feel accepted and understood for who we are. Wonderful Weirdos Day is also the day to consider whether or not someone is genuinely weird or simply a bit different from you.
