World Engineers Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Engineering

World Engineers Day is observed annually on September 15 to honour engineers and their contributions to society. Engineers are professionals who devise, design, and construct complex systems, structures, and materials to meet functional objectives and deliverables, taking into account factors such as practicability, regulation, safety, and cost. The word ‘engineer’ is derived from the Latin words ‘ingeniare’ and ‘ingenium’, which mean ‘to create or generate’ and ‘cleverness’, respectively. An engineer typically requires a four-year bachelor’s degree in one of several engineering disciplines — or, in certain peculiar jurisdictions, a master’s degree in an engineering discipline followed by four to six years of peer-reviewed professional practise, which would result in a thesis, and, finally, the passing of engineering board examinations.

The background of World Engineers Day

Thomas Savery and James Watt’s inventions established the foundation for modern mechanical engineering. During the Industrial Revolution, the creation of specialised machines and the maintenance of these instruments led to the rapid expansion of mechanical engineering in its birthplace of Britain and beyond.

Alessandro Volta’s experiments in the 19th century profoundly influenced and shaped the discipline of electrical engineering. The investigations of Michael Faraday, Georg Ohm, and others, as well as the revolutionary invention of the electric motor in 1872, also made significant contributions to the development of the discipline. Late in the 19th century, this discipline of engineering eventually became a profession. Electrical engineers had constructed a global electric telegraph network, and the United States and the United Kingdom established the first electrical engineering institutions. While it is difficult to name the first electrical engineer with certainty, it is noteworthy that Francis Ronalds was a standout individual in the field, having created the first working electric telegraph system in 1816 and documented a personal vision of the transformation of the world by electricity.

Late in the 19th century, James Maxwell and Heinrich Hertz laid the foundation for the field of electronics. Future inventions of the vacuum tube and the transistor would bolster the advancement of electronics to the extent that electrical and electronics engineering is presently the most prevalent engineering specialty. The development of chemical engineering also occurred during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. Chemical engineering is an altogether new industry that arose in response to the increase in demand for large-scale chemical production.
