In 1835, Jacob Perkins, the “father of the refrigerator,” was granted the first patent for a liquid ammonia-based vapour compression cycle. His patent was titled “Apparatus and Methods for Producing Ice and for Cooling Fluids.”
In the 19th century, refrigeration’s popularity expanded by leaps and bounds. First used extensively by breweries, then by the livestock industry. Gradually, it became a necessity for regular households.
