Robinson, affectionately known as “Mr. Oriole,” represented baseball’s noblest ideals and served as a model for all players. His extraordinary dedication to the game he cherished was evidenced by a career that spanned 23 years.

Robinson was dubbed “The Human Vacuum Cleaner” or “Mr. Hoover” due to his unparalleled defensive abilities, garnering him one of the most recognizable nicknames in sports. He played a crucial role in the 1966 and 1970 World Series championship teams for the Baltimore Orioles and was named to 18 All-Star teams during his tenure.

The Arkansas native tested out at second base after being signed as a free agent in 1955, but ultimately discovered his niche at third. Between 1960 and 1975, he won 16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards at that position, setting the standard for defensive excellence.

However, Robinson’s defensive abilities were not his only strength; he also possessed a potent weapon. Thanks to his 2,848 hits, 268 home runs, and 1,357 RBIs across all levels of baseball, his legacy will endure eternally.

After a remarkable 1964 season in which he set career highs in batting average (.317) and RBI totals (118), he was named the Most Valuable Player of the American League.

Robinson made history by becoming the first baseball player to be elected to the Hall of Fame on his first attempt after retiring at the conclusion of the 1977 season. In 1999, to recognize him as one of the top 25 athletes of the 20th century, Baseball named him to its All-Century team.

In addition, the Orioles honored him by retiring his jersey number, 5. Robinson was a philanthropist who, in his later years, donated the proceeds from the sale of the majority of his immense memorabilia collection to the Constance and Brooks Robinson Foundation.
