Did Jimmy Carter Die? The Carter Center announced on Saturday that former President Jimmy Carter, who at 98 is the oldest president in American history, has decided to forego further medical treatment and will receive hospice care at his Georgia home.

According to a statement posted on Twitter by the centre, “after a number of brief hospital admissions, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter chose to spend his remaining time at home with his family and to accept hospice care rather than further medical intervention.”

His family and medical personnel fully support him. The Carter family requests privacy at this time and is touched by his devoted following’s concern.

The centre provided no additional information about the conditions that led to his recent hospitalisations or his decision to enter hospice care. Mr. Carter has experienced a number of health issues in recent years, including multiple falls and a case of melanoma that spread to his liver and brain.

Jason Carter, the chairman of the Carter Center’s board of trustees and one of Mr. Carter’s grandchildren, reported seeing the former president and first lady on Friday. He stated on Twitter that “they are at peace and their home is, as usual, filled with love.”

Hospice care is care provided to terminally ill patients with a focus on relieving pain and discomfort rather than continuing treatment. The former president and his 95-year-old wife reside in a simple ranch home they constructed in Plains, Georgia, in 1961.

Mr. Carter has outlasted the two presidents who succeeded him and his own vice president for many years. In March of 2019, he surpassed former President George H.W. Bush, who had died in November of the preceding year, to become the president with the longest lifespan.

After his melanoma spread to his brain in 2015, Mr. Carter was praised for disclosing his illness to the public. During his treatment, he kept his promise to teach Sunday school at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. A few months later, he stated that he was no longer affected by cancer.

Mr. Carter has fallen at least three times in 2019, once breaking his hip and once requiring 14 stitches. Each time, he recovered, even quickly returning to a Habitat for Humanity construction site after a fall.

However, he has been gradually withdrawing from public view as of late, appearing or speaking less frequently. Mr. Biden, who was the first incumbent president to pay Mr. Carter a visit at his Georgia home, was unable to attend Mr. Carter’s inauguration in January 2021, when former presidents typically gather.

Nonetheless, in April of that year, Mr. Biden travelled to Plains to pay his respects. Mr. Carter’s final act of public service was filing a brief in support of a conservation group’s appeal to overturn a court ruling allowing the construction of a gravel road through the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.

He asserted that the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, which he had previously signed into law, would be undermined. It was reported as recently as last month that he was working on this project.

However, a weak economy and a 444-day hostage situation in Iran, during which 52 US diplomats were held captive, weakened his public standing, and he was defeated in the 1980 presidential election by former California governor Ronald Reagan.

After leaving office, he devoted his time to a variety of charitable endeavours around the world, such as helping the poor build homes, eradicating the Guinea worm, promoting human rights in oppressive regimes, supervising elections, and working to resolve conflicts.

In many ways, his efforts as a former president outweighed his time in office; this helped him win the Nobel Peace Prize and improve his reputation among a large number of Americans.
