‘Erroneous’ Tsunami Warning Shakes South Texas Residents

USGS added that it is difficult to evaluate a few early-20th-century reports of tsunami surges from Caribbean earthquakes along the Gulf Coast.

‘Erroneous’ Tsunami Warning Shakes South Texas Residents: South Texas residents have experienced hurricanes, tornadoes, and severe thunderstorms. However, a tsunami is improbable. On Tuesday, August 15, the National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning, which left a number of residents confused and astonished.

Don’t fret. NWS Tsunami Alerts tweeted that there is no tsunami threat for the Atlantic, East, or Gulf coasts of the United States. The centre tweeted, “We are aware that some applications have issued a false tsunami warning. Please disregard; no tsunami warning has been issued.”

‘Erroneous’ Tsunami Warning Shakes South Texas Residents

Currently, the National Weather Service is investigating the incident. Portland, a city located in Nueces and San Patricio Counties close to Corpus Christi and Aransas Pass, received a tsunami warning at 11:29 a.m.

Not for the first time have south Texans received a false tsunami warning. In 2019, a corporation posed as the Kingsville Police Department to send a tsunami warning text message to local residents. A subsequent text message was sent shortly thereafter to inform residents that the initial message was a test.

Locals in the area discussed the alert on social media. Shevi Love remarked, “Why would they scare us like that?” It went off extremely loudly just as I was putting my son down for a nap…glad everything is alright!

“It was on my phone.” I had to go back and reread it before I realised it said Test,” Waki Reid tweeted.

Large earthquakes and landslides that occur near or beneath the ocean generate tsunamis. According to the United States Geological Survey, the likelihood of a tsunami hitting the Gulf Coast is modest. USGS reports that throughout recorded history, all tsunami surges along the Gulf Coast have measured less than 1 metre.
