Why Does the Season Finale of Idol Air So Quickly?

The Idol will not conclude earlier than anticipated, according to Buzzfeed News. Tesfaye was quoted in a recent GQ profile as describing the programme as a “five-hour film,” while the premiere at Cannes was promoted as the first of five episodes.

However, Deadline reported in November 2021 that the programme would only consist of six episodes. After the departure of the show’s original director, Amy Seimetz, due to creative differences, it appears that the current adaptation of Season 1 always intended to conclude the story in five episodes.

HBO asserts that the future of ‘The Idol’ is uncertain.

Tesfaye’s statement that the fifth episode would be the series conclusion led to widespread speculation that “The Idol” had been cancelled. Variety reported that there would be six episodes per season in 2021, when HBO first gave the series the green light.

TVLine contacted HBO for comment on the shortened season, but a representative declined. The publication cites an unnamed source who claims that the story could have been told in five episodes instead of six, after Levinson replaced Amy Seimetz as director at Tesfaye’s request, and the sixth episode was never filmed.

In response to inquiries about the show’s future, an A-Max spokesperson directed Insider to a tweet from HBO’s PR account dated June 15, in which HBO stated that it had been “misreported” that a decision had been made. Insider questioned why only five episodes were produced for the first season.

When does the series conclude?

The series finale, episode five of The Idol, will premiere on NOW TV and Sky Atlantic on July 3 at 2 a.m., with a repeat airing that evening at 9 p.m.
