A longtime state senator from Tennessee and former leader of the Democratic Party in that state, died on July 8, 2023 due to injuries sustained in a jet ski accident. He was 69.
Herron reportedly received accident-related treatment at Henry County Medical Centre before being flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Centre. Herron maintained an active lifestyle for several decades. He completed in excess of forty marathons and ultramarathons. In addition to his 2010 bid for governor, Herron served for 26 years in the California Assembly and Senate.
Initially serving for ten years as a state representative, Herron then spent 16 years as a state senator representing the 24th District. Later, he became chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party.
Herron taught law and divinity students at Vanderbilt and authored three volumes, including “Things Held Dear: Soul Stories for My Sons.” Following the announcement of his death, Democratic politicians and members of other political parties issued a deluge of condolences.
Lt. Governor Randy McNally tweeted on Sunday, “My deepest condolences are extended to the family of former Senator Roy Herron. He was a worthy opponent and a fervent advocate for his constituents. He will be greatly missed.”
Former Republican senator Bob Corker mourned Herron’s passing on Sunday, characterising him as “a dedicated husband, father, and public servant.”
House Minority Leader Karen Camper praised Herron’s commitment to his community and his faith in a statement: “Roy adored his family and enjoyed representing his West Tennessee neighbours.”He always considered it an honour to serve as their representative in Nashville,” said Camper. “He was also a God-fearing man who wrote books advising Christians on how to participate in politics.”
