FERS September 2026 Payment: Federal retirees receiving FERS annuity payments can expect their September payment on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. This month has no weekend or federal holiday at the start, so the payment stays on the normal schedule.
The payment made in September isn’t for September but it covers the annuity earned during August 2026. The Office of Personnel Management, or OPM, generally pays retirement annuities on the first business day of each month for the previous month.

OPM explains that payments are made “usually on the first business day of the month.” Since September 1, 2026 is a Tuesday, there is no calendar change needed this time.
The September 1 payment is for August 2026. Federal retirees can also look at the next few payment dates to plan their monthly budgets.
OPM’s payment rule is simple. The money normally arrives on the first business day after the month it covers. This means the October 1 payment will cover September, while the November payment will move to November 2 because November 1, 2026 is a Sunday. The payment for December will come on January 4, 2027 because New Year’s Day is a federal holiday and the next days fall on the weekend.
Most federal retirees and survivors get their monthly money through direct deposit. OPM says more than 95% of federal retirees and survivors receive payments this way. Direct deposit can be sent to a bank, credit union or savings institution.
Even when OPM sends the payment on time, a bank or credit union may not show the money in the account at the exact same moment. Retirees should check their account based on their financial institution’s normal processing time.
Federal annuitants can also use OPM’s Retirement Services Online to view their annuity statement and manage details such as direct deposit, tax withholding and other payment information.

A missing payment doesn’t always mean there is a problem with OPM. The first step is to contact the bank or credit union and ask whether the deposit is pending or still being processed.
If the money still doesn’t appear, retirees can contact OPM for help. They can also use Retirement Services Online to check their latest payment statement and account details. OPM provides a Retirement Information Office at 1-888-767-6738 for retirement payment questions.
