Flying Without Real ID in 2026? TSA Will Charge You $45

Starting February 2026, travelers who arrive at airport security without a Real ID or passport will need to pay a $45 TSA fee for extra identity checks required before they can fly.

Real ID in 2026: The TSA has confirmed that new rules will start in February 2026 for people who fly without a Real ID. Many travelers have waited for years for clear instructions, and now the agency has shared the fee and the way the rule will work once the mandate begins.

How the New Fee will work at Airports?

The TSA said that any adult who comes to the airport without a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card will need to go through a special identity check. This check will cost $45. The agency explained that this is only for people who want to fly but do not have the right ID. Children do not need an ID when they travel with an adult.

The agency said, “If an individual does not have acceptable ID but wants to continue to fly, the TSA has the ability to verify their identity through other records… but it requires the use of more resources. As a result, the traveler will be charged a $45 fee.” The TSA also repeated the rule again later and said, “If you come to the airport without a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card, or another acceptable form of ID, you will be charged a $45 fee.”

This special check is not meant to replace normal identification. It is only a back-up plan for people who forget or do not have correct documents. The agency said the extra steps take more time and more workers, so the fee helps cover the cost.

Over 94% of passengers already use their REAL ID or other acceptable forms of identification, TSA said.

What are the acceptable forms of ID?

As listed by the TSA, here are the acceptable forms of ID:

  • REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
    • If you are not sure if your ID complies with REAL ID, check with your state Department of Motor Vehicles.
    • A temporary driver’s license is not an acceptable form of identification.
  • State-issued Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL) or Enhanced ID (EID)
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs)
  • HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
  • Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)

Real ID Deadline

The Real ID Act began in 2005 as a safety rule to make identification stronger across the country after the 9/11 attacks. But the plan faced many delays. States struggled with new systems, and the deadline moved again and again. Now the deadline for airports is set for February 2026.

Once the rule takes effect, a normal driver’s license that is not Real ID-approved will not let a person pass TSA security. Travelers will need a Real ID, a passport, a passport card, or another approved ID. Many states show a star on the top part of a Real ID card, so people can check their card at home.

Travel experts say people should update their ID early because DMV offices fill up fast. They warn that waiting too long could mean long lines or trouble getting the new ID before 2026.

The TSA said the new fee is not meant to punish people. It is only meant to keep security strong and help travelers who show up without the right ID. The agency said the best and fastest way through the airport is to bring a Real ID or a passport.
