The latest forecast suggests a 3.8% Social Security COLA for 2027, but the final increase will depend on July, August and September inflation data before October's official announcement.

Latest Social Security COLA Increase 2027: Social Security beneficiaries are entering the key stretch that will shape the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment, and early forecasts point to a 3.8% increase. The Senior Citizens League says the estimate has remained steady compared with its previous outlook. If it holds, it would be 1 percentage point above the 2.8% COLA that started in 2026 and would be the biggest jump since the 8.7% increase in 2023.
That projected 3.8% increase would add about $73.62 to the average monthly benefit used in the group’s forecast. The estimate would lift the average from $1,937.53 to about $2,011.15 a month. The exact amount for each person would still depend on their current benefit.

The official COLA depends on inflation readings from July, August and September, and the government will not know the final number until after the September data is released. The Social Security Administration uses the average CPI-W for those three months and compares it with the same period a year earlier to set the next COLA.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics is scheduled to release the July 2026 CPI report on August 12, the August report on September 11, and the September report on October 14. Only after that final reading can the 2027 increase be confirmed.
June’s inflation number may have helped forecasters, but it does not count in the official COLA formula. The SSA says the COLA is based on the July-through-September average CPI-W, not June.
As The Senior Citizens League executive director Shannon Benton said, “A 3.8 percent COLA might sound like a lot compared to last year’s 2.8 percent, but it won’t be enough to make up the difference between what seniors bring in and what they need to live with dignity.”

A larger COLA does not always mean people feel richer. Inflation is the reason the adjustment rises in the first place, so the extra money is often trying to keep up with higher prices rather than beat them. The SSA bases COLA on CPI-W, which tracks spending patterns for working households, not older adults specifically.
That matters because retirees often spend more on health care and housing than the CPI-W basket fully reflects, and Medicare premium increases can take away part of the gain before it reaches the bank account. The result is that even a bigger COLA can feel smaller than it looks on paper.
If the 3.8% estimate is ultimately confirmed, most Social Security recipients would see it in January 2027 payments. SSI recipients usually get their adjusted payment earlier, at the end of December, because January 1 is a holiday.
