New America 250 Social Security Cards: Last Date, Eligibility and Everything Parents Need to Know

Unlike a regular Social Security card, this commemorative version comes with the official Freedom 250 logo but it works basically the exact same for legal matters and identification purposes.

New America 250 Social Security Cards: As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has put out a special Freedom 250 commemorative Social Security card. The limited edition card got a lot of attention, with plenty of parents asking who is eligible and also how long that commemorative design will stay available.

Unlike a regular Social Security card, this commemorative version comes with the official Freedom 250 logo, but it works basically the exact same for legal matters and identification purposes.

How Long Will the America 250 Cards Be Available?

According to the Social Security Administration, the commemorative cards will be issued only to children born in the United States between July 2, 2026, and December 31, 2026.

Once this period ends, the Freedom 250 design will no longer be issued. Newborns born after December 31, 2026, will receive the standard Social Security card.

New America 250 Social Security Cards: Who Is Eligible?

Not every American will receive the commemorative card. To qualify, a child must:

  • Be born in the United States.
  • Be born between July 2 and December 31, 2026.
  • Receive an original Social Security card through the Enumeration at Birth (EAB) program, where parents request an SSN during the birth registration process.

Will Replacement Cards Have the Freedom 250 Logo?

No, the SSA has clarified that if a child gets a replacement or duplicate Social Security card, it will not have the commemorative Freedom 250 design even when the child was born during the eligibility period. The special logo is reserved exclusively for original cards issued through the Enumeration at Birth program.

Do Parents Need to Apply Separately?

No additional application is required. Parents who request a Social Security number for their newborn during the normal birth registration process at a hospital, birthing center or through a licensed midwife will automatically receive the commemorative card if their child meets the eligibility criteria. The SSA has also warned families to ignore anyone asking for payment or additional personal information to obtain the card, as it is issued free of charge.

Why Has SSA Introduced the Card?

The commemorative card marks the 250th anniversary of American independence, also known as America 250. According to SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano, the initiative celebrates the nation’s history while recognizing more than 90 years of the Social Security program.

“Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago,” said Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano. “The next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive limited-edition Social Security cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo. Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are strengthening Social Security, improving service, and building an SSA to serve Americans today and in the future.”

If you receive a suspicious communication claiming to be from SSA or from a third party on behalf of the agency, please report it to the Office of the Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov/report or call 1-800-269-0271.
