Social Security 2027 COLA: Millions of Americans receiving Social Security are waiting for the next cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). The yearly increase is meant to help people manage rising prices and cover their daily expenses.
The Social Security Administration was expected to announce the 2027 COLA on October 14, 2026. The Senior Citizens League has estimated that the increase could be 3.5%. But the estimate is not the final figure, and beneficiaries should check the official announcement for the confirmed rate.
If the increase is 3.5%, it would be higher than the 2.8% COLA that took effect in January 2026. The COLA is added to monthly benefits. It is not a separate bonus payment. Eligible recipients will get the higher amount through their regular Social Security payments once the new rates take effect.

When will the Higher Social Security Payments Arrive?
The 2027 COLA will apply to benefits payable for January 2027. But the date the money reaches a person’s bank account will depend on their usual payment schedule.
Most Social Security retirement beneficiaries receive payments on Wednesdays, based on their date of birth.
- People born between the 1st and 10th usually receive payments on the second Wednesday of the month.
- People born between the 11th and 20th usually receive payments on the third Wednesday.
- People born between the 21st and 31st usually receive payments on the fourth Wednesday.
Some people follow a different schedule. This includes many beneficiaries who started receiving Social Security before May 1997 and certain people who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
SSI payments usually arrive at the beginning of the month. The payment date may change if it falls on a weekend or federal holiday. For this reason, beneficiaries should check their own payment schedule instead of expecting everyone to receive the increase on the same day.
