National Girls and Women in Sports Day History

First marked in 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day honors Olympic volleyball star Flo Hyman as the greatest female player of all time and highlights her contributions to the cause of equitable representation for women in sports. Hyman passed away during a competition in Japan from Marfan’s syndrome, a hereditary illness.
Since then, the purpose of the day has changed to honor female athletes in general, their accomplishments, the benefits of having more women participate in sports, and the difficulties associated with equalizing female involvement in sports. The day also honors the advancements made after the adoption of Title IX, the civil rights legislation.

A public statute known as Title IX was passed in 1972, and it fundamentally altered the story of women in sports. All federally financed programs and activities were required to have equal participation from all parties, including public schools. This meant that all kids, regardless of gender, would have equal access to sporting opportunities. Women’s sports saw a breakthrough with Title IX. Just one in every 27 females had access to sports before this. However, that number has now dropped to two out of every five girls, which is a great improvement.
All 50 states observe National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Typically, community gatherings, award shows, and other sporting events are held to honor the day and encourage girls and women to be active and participate in sports.
