Google’s Pixel 8A: AI Features and 7-Year Upgrade Lifecycle Revealed

Google's Pixel 8a is set to feature AI and Android OS updates, ensuring a lengthy upgrade lifecycle and a promise of seven years of security updates.

Google’s Pixel 8A: Another round of leaks has shown that the mid-range smartphone, the Pixel 8A, will receive many of the same AI features as its siblings and a lengthy upgrade lifecycle as the launch date draws near.

The unusual promise of seven years of Android OS and security updates was carried over into Google’s Pixel 8 series. It appears that Google will carry out that pledge with its upcoming A-series gadget.

Among other things, marketing papers from a retail listing that were discovered to be leaked by Android Headlines disclosed that the Pixel 8a will receive upgrades for seven years. Nevertheless, it is implied from the documents here that the “7 years of security updates” may not include upgrades for Android OS as well. Nevertheless, the standard Pixel 8 listing on the Google Store use similar wording.

The company unveiled the Pixel Fold and Pixel 7A last year, along with features like Magic Editor in Photos and Immersive View for Maps. In light of that, probably, this year’s conference will also have a decent balance of software and hardware changes.

Here’s what we anticipate Google to unveil at this year’s I/O, based on rumors and conjecture.

iPhone 16 Rumors: New Features and AI-Powered Functions Expected in Apple’s Next Smartphone

All about Pixel 8A

The Pixel 8A, the next model in Google’s reasonably priced Pixel A series, is probably going to be unveiled. These more affordable gadgets have many of the same features as Pixel flagship phones. For example, the 7A’s camera has many of the same capabilities as the Pixel 7’s, and it has the same processor.

According to an Android Authority leak, the 8A may also receive the Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 engine and 120Hz refresh rate display. It might also have the same three cameras as the 7A: a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 64-megapixel primary camera, and a 13-megapixel selfie camera. The 8A may be available in three colors: blue, porcelain (beige), and obsidian (black), according to another claim from leaker TechDroider.

Some of the AI tools that made their debut with the Pixel 8 series, such as Magic Editor and Best Take, may be included in the 8A. Circle to Search and other capabilities are now available on a few of Google’s less expensive phones, such as the Pixel 7A and Pixel 6 series. By bringing those cutting-edge experiences to a (little) more affordable gadget, it might keep up that trajectory.

To affordability, what might the price of the Pixel 8A be? The 7A costs $500, but according to a report on the German website WinFuture, Google might offer it for $550 to continue its current trend of price increases. By comparison, the flagship Pixel 8 costs $700, so you would still be saving a little money. Furthermore, the amount of features Google jams into the 8A could make it a compelling choice.

Android 15

Since Google I/O typically provides a sneak peek at new software features, it’s reasonable to anticipate that this year’s keynote will cover additional information about Android 15, the company’s next mobile device operating system, and its eventual public release. The new and improved Android 15 features, including security, privacy, and productivity aspects, are now accessible in beta.

For example, you can simply free up space on your phone with the support for app archiving and unarchiving. Additionally, there is improved support for satellite communication and end-to-end encryption for contact keys.

AI upgrades

AI was the buzzword of choice at last year’s I/O. This year, with Google and other businesses continuing to take advantage of the quickly advancing technology, that is probably going to be the case once more. We might hear more about the launch of Gemini, Google’s rival to ChatGPT.

According to the giant search engine, Gemini will take over as the default assistant on Android phones for users who download the app and give their permission. Additionally, there has been discussion regarding Apple possibly including Gemini AI models in its next-generation iPhones. However, this is probably best kept under wraps until Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

Additionally, Google may preview brand-new AI features for mobile devices during I/O or enhance existing ones, such as Circle to Search.

Other updates

Although speculations indicate that the launch may take place later this year, it is unclear if Google will present the second iteration of the Pixel Fold at I/O once more this year. According to Android Police, there is even conjecture that the firm may incorporate the device into its top Pixel series and call it the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, rather than just the Pixel Fold

Furthermore, since declaring at I/O years ago that it would be co-developing the operating system with Samsung, Google has remained rather silent about its Wear OS wearable software. Additionally, we anticipate more updates and additions to Google’s suite of products, which already includes Drive, Maps, Search, and more.

If not, we’ll see what surprises Google has in store. When May 14th arrives, CNET will be there as usual, providing real-time information.
