Bullying did not prevent Alvarez from demonstrating his fortitude. Alvarez began boxing at age 13 after observing his elder brother become a professional boxer. Indeed, at the age of 15, Alvarez won the Junior Mexican National Boxing Championship. In his amateur career, he had a record of 44-2, with 12 victories coming by knockout. Alvarez turned professional after displaying tremendous promise in boxing. Since the beginning of his professional boxing career, Alvarez has demonstrated his expertise with each victory. His first title victory came in 2007 against Ricardo Cano. He claimed the WBA Fedecentro welterweight title in 2008 after defeating Gabriel Martinez. Alvarez won the N.A.B.F. and W.B.O. Latino welterweight titles as a result of this victory (2009), and he retained the titles in subsequent bouts. In the same year, he defeated Marat Khuzeev to win the WBC Youth welterweight championship. Alvarez showed no indication of slowing down. He then won the WBC light middleweight championship, which he held for many years. Alvarez was deemed “number one” after unifying his WBC and WBA titles at this time. However, he was defeated by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and consequently forfeited his titles. This defeat did not discourage Alvarez; he continued to fight and win additional championships. Later, Alvarez ventured into business when he founded Canelo Promotions to promote sports in Mexico. In 2013, the organisation represented forty boxers in Mexico.

The boxer was previously engaged to Marisol Gonzales, Miss Mexico Universe 2003. Later, Alvarez wed Fernanda Gomez at the Cathedral of Guadalajara. Alvarez has four children from three distinct mothers, including three daughters and one son. In addition to boxing, Alvarez enjoys golf. According to reports, he retired from boxing in order to focus on business and play golf daily.
