Early years

Bhagat was raised in a traditional Hindu Punjabi family. His father was an Indian Army lieutenant colonel, and his mother was a scientist at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. In 1998, Chetan Bhagat earned a master’s degree in business administration and was hired by Peregrine Investments Holdings in Canada. He then worked as an investment banker for Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong, devoting the majority of his time to composing, completing, and revising draughts of his debut novel, Five Point Someone. After two years, Rupa Publications accepted and offered to publish his manuscript. In 2006, he was the vice president of Deutsche Bank’s Strategic Investment Group in Hong Kong.
