Claire Saffitz was born into an Ashkenazi Jewish family in St. Louis, Missouri. In the early 1900s, her great-grandfather immigrated to the United States from what was then Russia and is now Ukraine.
As a child, Saffitz attended the local Captain Elementary School and Clayton High School, graduating in 2005. She attended Harvard University from which she graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in American history and literature. She studied French cuisine and patisserie at École Grégoir-Ferrand in Paris, France.
