Dan Rather Biography: The American journalist Dan Rather is widely recognized for his extensive tenure as a news anchor at C.B.S. He was born on October 31, 1931, in Wharton County, Texas, and during his adolescence, he and his family relocated to Houston. In 1950, following his graduation from John H. Reagan High School, he commenced his journalistic career. He held the position of editor for “The Houstonian,” the official newspaper of Sam Houston State University, and provided coverage of high school and Sam Houston State University football games for KSAM-FM radio during his tenure at the institution. Prior to 1952, he held positions as a journalist for the “Associated Press,” the “United Press,” and various Texas radio stations. The “Houston Chronicle” employed him from 1954 to 1955. Rather earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Sam Houston State University in 1953, following his graduation. The journalism graduate also briefly enrolled at South Texas College of Law.

Following his tenure at ABC’s KTRK-TV in 1959, he advanced to the position of news director at C.B.S.’s KHOU-TV. His 1961 coverage of Hurricane Carla for KHOU-TV earned him widespread recognition and the distinction for broadcasting the first radar image of a hurricane, which revealed the storm’s size to viewers. In response to his radar image report, more than 350,000 individuals were evacuated. For a six-month trial at C.B.S. in New York in 1962, Rather relocated to the state. Among his initial reports were those detailing the American Airlines Flight 1 disaster in Jamaica Bay and the suffocation of children at a hospital in Binghamton, New York. Shortly thereafter, Rather was promoted to the position of commander of CBS’s Southwest bureau in Dallas. In 1963, he was appointed to the Southern bureau in New Orleans, where he oversaw news coverage throughout the South, Southwest, Mexico, and Central America. Rather was appointed White House correspondent for CBS in 1964, subsequent to his exemplary coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the subsequent period of mourning. After 24 years, Rather retired as the C.B.S. Evening News anchor in 2005, having assumed that role in 1981.

Rather’s retirement has not prevented him from pursuing his passions. Dan Rather joined the AXS-TV network in 2006, where he produced and hosted the program “Dan Rather Reports” until 2013. Exactly one year after the conclusion of “Dan Rather Reports,” he initiated “The Big Interview with Dan Rather,” a series comprised of in-depth interviews with prominent individuals from the entertainment and music industries. Additionally, he has discussed a variety of subjects and produced numerous documentaries under the title “Dan Rather Presents.” (2012) marked the publication of his autobiography, “Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News.” He founded News and Guts Media, his own production company, in 2015, where he oversaw the development of a number of his initiatives. Together with The Young Turks, a news commentary YouTube channel, he debuted “The News with Dan Rather,” a 30-minute newscast that aired on Monday evenings, in 2018. He has received numerous Emmy Awards, Peabody Awards, and honorary degrees from universities over the course of his career. However, this diligent journalist has been about more than just his profession. Since his 1957 wedding to Jean Goebel, the couple has produced two children: a daughter named Dan and a son named Robin. Robin resides in Austin, Texas, where she is an environmentalist and community activist, while Dan serves as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. The family owns two homes in Austin and New York City.
