Dermot Kennedy Biography:

Early Life

Ireland’s Dermot Joseph Kennedy was raised in Rathcoole, a neighborhood of Dublin. At the age of 14, the young singer-songwriter began writing songs and began playing the guitar at the age of 10. But it wasn’t until he was around 17 that he began to take music seriously. His mother and father encouraged him to pursue his musical interests. When he was still a minor, he once expressed his gratitude to his father for taking him to open mic nights in downtown Dublin on a regular basis. However, his mother enrolled him in the esteemed Maynooth University in County Kildare, where he spent three years studying classical music.

Career

During his time at Maynooth University, Kennedy formed a band called Shadows and Dust with three friends, one of whom is his current drummer, Michael Quinn. Kennedy also pursued a solo career. He was sorry to see the band break up in 2015 because he had a great time playing with them.

He performed in Europe, Australia, and the United States in 2018 and 2019; all of the venues were completely packed and all of the tickets were sold out. Additionally, he performed at South by Southwest, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. In 2019, he participated in the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. He performed live for 14 minutes at NPR’s Music Tiny Desk Concert in an acoustic setting and for 20 minutes at W.G.B.H.’s Fraser performance studio.
