Johnson was born on May 2, 1972 in Hayward, California. His father, professional wrestler Rocky Johnson, and his mother, Ata, are his parents. Peter Maivia, his paternal grandfather, ascended to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s as ‘High Chief.’ The majority of Johnson’s childhood was spent travelling with his parents and watching his father compete in the arena. Johnson began playing football during his senior year of high school, and he quickly received a full scholarship to the University of Miami, where he excelled.
