He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in El Paso, Texas, in 1985, and subsequently received athletic scholarships to the University of New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands University. To pursue a professional wrestling career, he relocated to Mexico from a wrestling family with a notable reputation. Guerrero debuted as the inaugural Máscara Mágica in the CMLL (a professional wrestling organization headquartered in Mexico City), where he maintained his position until 1992. Guerrero made his professional wrestling début in 1992 under the alias Black Tiger II in New Japan Pro-Wrestling.
