George Strait Biography: George Strait’s birthday is May 18th, 1952. This legendary country musician from Texas enchanted the world with his enchanting voice. Yet at one point he was rejected by every record label. The only reason he continued singing was because his wife persuaded him to stay another year, during which he was recognised for his unique musical style — a blend of western swing and honky-tonk — and his unadorned yet alluring appearance: blue jeans, a western shirt, and a cowboy hat (classic!). Therefore, what better way to honour this artist than to commemorate his birthday together? Let’s commence.
George Strait Birthday
George Harvey Strait Sr. was born to Doris Jean Couser and John Byron Strait Sr. in Poteet, Texas, United States. He was raised in Frio County, close to Pearsall. Strait’s parents divorced when he was in the fourth grade. Strait and his sibling John Jr. were raised by their father, while their mother moved away with their sister Pency.
Strait began his musical career as a teenager in a rock and roll garage band. The artist was influenced by The Beatles. Eventually, his style was influenced by Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Hank Thompson, Merle Haggard, Bob Wills, and Frank Sinatra, and he began to favour country music. 1971 saw the wedding of George Strait and Norma Voss.
In the same year, the artist enlisted as an infantryman in the United States Army. After that, he began performing with the army-sponsored ensemble Rambling Country. From 1971 to 1975, Strait served in the U.S. Army, ultimately attaining the rank of Corporal. Strait enrolled at Southwest Texas State University after his discharge from the military and graduated with a degree in agriculture. During his college years, the singer became a member of the country ensemble “Stoney Ridge” as a vocalist. Afterward, he started performing in Texas, Houston, and Huntsville. The group issued numerous singles but did not attain widespread recognition.
Strait began his solo career with MCA Records in February 1981, issuing his debut single ‘Unwound’; the rest is history. Unfortunately, after his daughter’s untimely death in 1986, Strait limited his media interactions. In excess of 30 years of recording, the artist amassed 61 number-one recordings on all U.S. country charts despite the loss of his wife. Moreover, as of 2022, he retains the record for the most number-one singles and albums, platinum albums, gold albums, and multi-platinum albums in the history of country music.
