Hans Zimmer Birthday
Hans Zimmer grew up in Konigstein-Falkenstein, where he played the piano at home but hated the discipline of formal lessons, so he only took piano lessons for a short time. Zimmer attended the Swiss cantonal international boarding school Ecole D’Humanité. As a child, he travelled to London to attend Hurtwood House School. During his adolescence, he was influenced by Ennio Morricone’s film scores, and he has stated that the music from ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ inspired him to become a film composer.
Zimmer began his musical career in the 1970s with the bands Krakatoa and then the Buggles, a London-based new wave group formed in 1977 by Trevor Horn, Geoff Downes, and Bruce Woolley. Zimmer appears momentarily in the 1979 Buggles music video for “Video Killed the Radio Star.” After leaving the Buggles, a new wave band formed in 1976 by Maurizio Arcieri and Christina Moser, he joined the Italian band Krisma. Krisma was featured as a synthesiser on his third studio album, Cathode Mamma. Additionally, he has collaborated with Ultravox’s Warren Cann on the band Helden. In 1984, Zimmer and Cann were invited to perform in Segovia with the Spanish ensemble Mecano. Two tracks from this performance were included on the Spanish-only 1985 album “Mecano: En Concierto.”
Zimmer has received numerous honours and awards, including the Richard Kirk Career Achievement Award from the B.M.I. Film Music Awards in 1996, the Frederick Loewe Award for ‘Film Composing’ from the Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2003, the ASCAP Henry Mancini Award in 2003, and the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award from Hollywood in Vienna in 2018. In addition, Zimmer received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2010. He dedicated the medal to his publicist and lifelong companion Ronni Chasen, who was shot and killed in Beverly Hills the previous month.
