John Deere Biography: John Deere, who was born on February 7, 1804, was an inventor, blacksmith, and manufacturer who founded Deere & Company in the 19th century. Deere was a legendary businessman who solved a problem and turned the solution into a company. As a pioneering American inventor, Deere concentrated on developing agricultural tools and implements that addressed an inefficiency issue. This led him to create the cast-steel plough.
John Deere is a respected brand in the agricultural and manufacturing industries. His inventiveness and labour laid the groundwork for the Fortune 500 firm Deere & Company. However, Deere did not always have the answers. John Deere was born in Rutland, Vermont, on February 7, 1804. Born into a middle-class family, he was an Aquarius of White ethnicity. A few years after his birth, Deere’s father left for England, and by 1808, no one had heard from him again. Devastated, Deere’s mother raised him and briefly enrolled him at Middlebury College.
When Deere turned 17 in 1821, he became an apprentice for Captain Benjamin, a successful Middlebury blacksmith. After five years of cohesive training, Deere started trading as a blacksmith in 1826. He worked in Burlington, Vermont, before setting up a shop in Vergennes and later in Leicester. Due to the frequent repairs he performed in his line of work, John Deere realised that wood and cast-iron ploughs were incapable of fully penetrating the tough, sticky, and clayey Illinois prairie soils. He then started experimenting and soon concluded that polished steel ploughs of a different shape would handle the prairie soil better. By 1837, Deere had created America’s first cast-steel plough with a wrought-iron frame that was commercially successful.
This first invention was sold to a farmer, and word quickly spread about its effectiveness. His orders peaked at 100 ploughs a year by 1841, and two years later, at 33, he partnered with Leonard Andrus to keep up with demand. In 1848, the partnership dissolved due to differences. Deere then moved to the transportation hub, Moline, Illinois, with his wife, Demarius Lamb, and nine children. His success only increased from here, and by 1855, he had sold over 10,000 ploughs. In 1858, Deere formed a partnership with his son Charles. Soon after this, other family members followed suit. Ten years later, Deere’s business was incorporated as the well-known “Deere & Company.” His wife died in 1865, and in 1867 he married her sister, Lucinda. Deere passed away in his home on May 17, 1886, leaving his family in charge of his business.
