John Legend Biography: John Roger Stephens was born in Springfield, Ohio, on December 28, 1978. Ronald and Phyllis, his parents, had four children. His seamstress mother was also the conductor of the church choir and a vocalist. His father was a drummer and an employee of an International Harvester facility. His grandmother played the organ at church. At the age of four, John began performing with the church choir. It was his homeschooling. The age at which he acquired piano skills was seven. Two semesters were skipped by Legend as a result of his exceptional academic abilities.
