John Wayne was born to war veteran Clyde Leonard Morrison and Mary Alberta Brown in Winterset, Iowa. Wayne descended from the English, the Irish, and the Scotch-Irish. His family relocated to Glendale, California in 1916, where he attended Glendale Union High School. Wayne excelled in both academics and athletics, and was a member of the football team. He also participated in the team’s 1924 league championship run. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Southern California on an athletic scholarship, majoring in pre-law. However, due to a bodysurfing tragedy that fractured his collarbone, his athletic ambitions and degree were cut short.
Soon after, he began working for Fox Film and was assigned minor roles. In 1930, he landed his first leading role in “The Big Trail.” He chose the screen moniker “John Wayne” as his alias. After his first starring role, Wayne was relegated to supporting roles. In 1939, he received his second landmark role in “Stagecoach.” After World War II, when Wayne’s age was an exempting factor, he starred in “Shepherd of the Hills” (1941), his first colour film. Wayne was nominated for an Oscar in 1949, and he co-founded the production company Batjac in 1952. Wayne produced a number of his films through this company. The films “Seven Men From Now” (1956) and “Gun the Man Down” (1956) were produced by his company. After this, Wayne appeared in multiple films. As director and producer of “The Alamo” in 1960, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In his later years, Wayne starred in several films, including “The Cowboys” (1972), “The Shootist” (1976), and others.
On June 11, 1979, he was diagnosed with gastric cancer and passed away. Seven offspring from two marriages and several grandchildren survived Wayne. His second wife, Esperanza Baur, had no offspring during their marriage.
