Johnny Lever Biography: Johnny Lever (born John Prakash Rao Janumala on August 14, 1957) is an Indian actor and comedian whose works in Hindi cinema are well-known. He is one of India’s first stand-up performers. He has received numerous honours, including thirteen nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role, which he has won twice for his performance in the films Deewana Mastana (1997) and Dulhe Raja (1998). Since beginning his career in 1984, he has appeared in over three hundred Hindi films.

Early years
Lever was born in Prakasam, Andhra Pradesh, to a Telugu Christian family on 14 August 1957. His father worked as an operator at the Hindustan Unilever facility for six years, where he also worked as a labourer. Lever was raised in the King’s Circle neighbourhood of Dharavi in Mumbai. His native language is Telugu, and he speaks Bengali, Hindi, English, Marathi, and Tulu fluently. He is the oldest of three sisters and two siblings (including his younger brother Jimmy Moses) in his family.
Lever attended Andhra education society English high school until the seventh grade, as he was unable to continue his education due to family financial difficulties. As a result, he decided to abandon school and began working odd jobs, such as selling pens on the streets of Mumbai by imitating and dancing to the songs of famous Hindi film stars of the time. He also spent his formative years in Yakutpura, an old city in Hyderabad, where he honed his distinctive comedic acting technique.
During a Hindustan Unilever company event, he imitated a few senior officers, and the employees have since referred to him as Johnny Lever. When he subsequently entered the film industry, he chose the stage name Johnny Lever.
Career
Johnny Lever, a pioneer in the Indian stand-up comedy industry, began his career in musical theatre before joining Kalyanji-Anandji. Due to increasing absenteeism, he left Hindustan Unilever (HUL) in 1981 and began performing in various shows and international tours. In 1982, actor Sunil Dutt offered him his first film, Dard Ka Rishta. Lever recorded a comedy cassette titled Hasi Ke Hangame and performed in a charity show in 1986, which prompted producer Gul Anand to offer him the role of Naseeruddin Shah’s co-star in the film Jalwa.
In the 1980s, his films Tum Par Hum Qurban and Dard Ka Rishta brought him fame. He has appeared in over three hundred and fifty films, including Tezaab, Kasam, Khatarnak, and Kishen Kanhaiya. In the 1990s, he achieved his first significant success with Baazigar, and he continued to perform live. In 2019, Lever was awarded the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Nobel Prize. He appeared in Rang, Anbirkku Alavillai, and Gara in the 2010s. Lever also appeared in the television comedies Zabaan Sambhalke, Johny Aala Re, and Comedy Circus. In 2017, he was appointed as Commissioner Googol Chatterjee on Partners. Lever is the president of MAAM and has performed in thousands of live performances around the globe.
