Kapil Sibal Biography: Born on 8 August 1948, Kapil Sibal is an Indian jurist and politician. As a Senior Advocate, he represented several high-profile cases before the Supreme Court of India and is regarded as one of India’s most renowned solicitors. He is a member of the Rajya Sabha of Parliament.
Sibal, a graduate of the University of Delhi and Harvard University, has practised law on Wall Street and held several significant legal and administrative positions, such as Additional Solicitor General and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association. Sibal entered Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1998 to represent Bihar. Prior to that, he had unsuccessfully run against Sushma Swaraj for the Lok Sabha. He subsequently ran for office from Chandni Chowk and won in 2004 and 2009.

Kapil Sibal Early years
Sibal was born in Jalandhar, Punjab, on August 8, 1948. His family moved to India during the 1947 partition. In 1964, Kapil Sibal relocated to Delhi. After graduating from St. John’s High School, he enrolled at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi to earn his Bachelor of Arts. He received his LL.B. from the University of Delhi’s prestigious Faculty of Law and his M.A. in history from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. In 1972, he entered the bar association. In 1973, he met the requirements for Indian Administrative Services and was offered a position. However, he declined the offer and established his own legal practise. In 1977, he earned an LL.M. from Harvard Law School, where he had enrolled in the programme. In 1983, he was designated as a senior attorney.
He was designated Additional Solicitor General of India in 1989. In 1994, he effectively defended V. Ramaswami during impeachment proceedings as a member of Parliament. On 10 May 1993, the impeachment motion was presented to the assembly for debate and vote. There were 196 votes in favour of impeachment, no votes against, and 205 abstentions by members of the ruling Congress and its allies out of a total of 401 members present at the assembly that day. Three times he had served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, in 1995–1996, 1997–1998, and 2001–2002.

Hira Lall Sibal, Kapil Sibal’s father, was a renowned advocate whose family migrated to India in 1947 during the partition. The International Bar Association named H.L. Sibal a “Living Legend of the Law” in 1994, and in 2006, the Government of India honoured him with the ‘Padma Bhushan’ award for his distinguished services in the field of Public Affairs. In 1973, he wed Nina Sibal, who died of breast cancer in 2000. Sibal’s two sons from his first marriage, Amit and Akhil, are both attorneys. Sibal married Promila Sibal in 2005. His sibling is Kanwal Sibal, a former foreign minister of India and a retired top diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service.
