Kenneth Arnold Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, to elementary school teacher David Chesney and hairdresser Karen Chandler. There is a sibling named Jennifer Chandler. Chesney attended and graduated from Gibbs High School in 1986. In the same year, his mother gave him his first guitar as a Christmas present. Soon thereafter, he taught himself to play the instrument. Then, he attended East Tennessee State University to study advertising.
In 1989, he independently recorded and released a musical album. The album sold over one thousand copies, and he purchased a new guitar with the proceeds. 1990 marked Chesney’s graduation from East Tennessee State University.
