Layne Thomas Staley was born in Kirkland, Washington, on August 22, 1967, to Phillip Blair Staley and Nancy Elizabeth Staley. Staley was raised as a Christian Scientist, but as an adult he became sceptical of religion. Staley started playing the drums at age 12 and was influenced by Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Together with a group of Shorewood High School students, he founded Sleze in 1984. 1985’s low-budget film “Father Rock” featured Staley and his band Sleze.
