Layne Staley Birthday

Layne Thomas Staley was born in Kirkland, Washington, on August 22, 1967, to Phillip Blair Staley and Nancy Elizabeth Staley. Staley was raised as a Christian Scientist, but as an adult he became sceptical of religion. Staley started playing the drums at age 12 and was influenced by Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Together with a group of Shorewood High School students, he founded Sleze in 1984. 1985’s low-budget film “Father Rock” featured Staley and his band Sleze. In 1986, Sleze evolved into the speed metal band Alice N’ Chains.

Staley met guitarist Jerry Cantrell at a Seattle gathering while working at the Music Bank rehearsal studios. Cantrell had heard Staley’s vocal while watching his former band, Alice N’ Chains, perform. The two close friends shared a deteriorating rehearsal space as their home for nearly a year. Staley joined Cantrell’s band on a permanent basis in 1987. The final demo, titled The Treehouse Tapes, was finalised in 1988 and sent to music managers Kelly Curtis and Susan Silver. Curtis and Silver forwarded the demo to Nick Terzo, the A&R representative for Columbia Records, who scheduled a meeting with label president Don Ienner. Based on 1989’s The Treehouse Tapes, Terzo signed Alice in Chains to Columbia Records. With lyrics written by Staley, ‘Man in the Box’ became a massive success, and Alice in Chains appeared in Cameron Crowe’s 1992 film “Singles.”

Many individuals believe that Staley’s lyrics address his personal issues, including his substance addiction and depression. Cantrell was primarily responsible for writing the music and lyrics for Alice in Chains, while Staley subsequently contributed additional vocals. Before the 2009 release of “Black Gives Way to Blue,” Staley would ultimately be credited with more than fifty percent of the discography’s lyrics. Additionally, he played guitar on the tracks ‘Angry Chair’ and ‘Hate to Feel.’ November 1995 saw the publication of “Alice in Chains,” also known as “Tripod.” After debuting atop the American charts, it was certified as double platinum. Staley wrote all of the lyrics with the exception of ‘Grind,’ ‘Heaven Beside You,’ and ‘Over Now.’ One of Staley’s last performances with Alice in Chains was at the New York MTV Unplugged concert.

Layne Staley Biography: 5 SURPRISE FACTS

Staley stated his ambition to become a singer in his Dr. Seuss book, “All About Me,” when he was nine years old.

At age 12, Stanley expressed his passion of music through percussion; in his teens, he played drums for a few glam-rock bands.

Stanley fractured his foot in an ATV accident just prior to Alice in Chains’ tour opening for Ozzy Osbourne in support of their album “No More Tears”; as a result, the vocalist was forced to use crutches to support himself onstage.

Following Staley’s death, numerous bands, including Cold, Staind, Pearl Jam, and Zakk Wylde, poured their recollections and affection for him into songs.

James Hetfield of Metallica recently stated that “Death Magnetic” began as a tribute to Staley and all those who have devoted themselves for rock ‘n’ roll.
