Louis Armstrong Birthday
Mary Albert and William Armstrong gave birth to Louis Daniel Armstrong. William abandoned the family shortly after Louis’s birth, leaving Louis to be reared by his grandmother. At the age of five, he moved in with his mother and attended the Fisk School for Boys. Two years later, the Karnoffskys adopted him and cared for him as a member of their family.
Louis pulled out of school at the age of 11 and moved to Perdido Street with his mother, Lucy, and Tom Lee. Armstrong was apprehended in 1912 for firing a blank into the air and placed in the custody of the Coloured Waif’s Home. Armstrong, upon leaving the detention centre, joined a group of lads who sang for money on the streets. There, he honed his cornet talents and met Peter Davis, his first cornet instructor.
Armstrong moved in with his father and stepmother, Gertrude, on June 14, 1914. Until Gertrude gave birth to a daughter, he remained in the residence for several months. Armstrong felt unwelcome in the family and consequently returned to his mother. There, he obtained employment at a dance hall owned by Henry Ponce. Armstrong performed with brass ensembles in the years to come. In 1918, he travelled with Fate Marable’s ensemble. Louis compared his time with the Marable to “going to university” because it provided him with experience working with written arrangements. By the 1950s, Louis was a well-known icon who had amassed a global following.
