Hargitay began performing in high school shortly after being crowned Miss Beverly Hills, USA, in the early 1980s. In 1982, after completing her high school education at Marymount High School, she enrolled at UCLA and attended the School of Theater, Film, and Television.

She dropped out of college and joined the Groundlings improv company in Los Angeles, despite not having completed her degree. Soon thereafter, she began to play smaller roles on television.
