Mehbooba Mufti Political career

Mehbooba became one of the most prominent members elected from Bijbehara on an Indian National Congress ticket during the 1996 state assembly elections. Her father had rejoined the Congress, which he had quit in 1987, out of anger at the party’s alliance with its traditional rival in the state. She subsequently served as opposition leader in the assembly, challenging the government of chief minister Farooq Abdullah with venom.

She resigned her seat in the assembly and ran in the 1999 parliamentary elections in Srinagar, where she was defeated by incumbent member Omar Abdullah. When assembly elections were conducted again in 2002, she defeated Rafi Ahmed Mir to win the Pahalgam seat from South Kashmir in the state assembly. She was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and 2014 from the Anantnag constituency. She defeated incumbent MP Mirza Mehboob Beg in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

The second time the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) formed a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir was after her father’s demise in January 2016. On April 4, 2016, she took the oath and became Jammu and Kashmir’s first female chief minister.

On June 19, 2018, she resigned as Kashmir’s chief minister. Her government had been an alliance between the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and the BJP, but in February 2018 there was a schism in the alliance when two BJP ministers publicly supported a man accused of raping and murdering an eight-year-old girl in Kathua District.

She ran for the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in 2019 but lost to Hasnain Masoodi of the National Conference.
