Mohanlal Biography: Mohanlal is a film actor, performer, and producer from India. His contributions to Indian cinema have made him one of the most prominent actors in the Malayalam film industry. Mohanlal made his film début with 1980’s Manjil Virainja Pookal.

Mohanlal Biography

Early years

Mohanlal Viswanathan was born on 21 May 1960 in the village of Elanthoor, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. He is the youngest child of Viswanathan Nair, a former Kerala government bureaucrat and law secretary, and Santhakumari. He had an older sibling named Pyarelal, who perished in a military exercise in 2000. Mohanlal was given his name by his maternal relative Gopinathan Nair, who considered naming him Roshanlal before settling on Mohanlal. However, his father refrained from granting him the family name. His father was adamant that he not take their surname, which was their caste name (Nair). Mohanlal was raised in Mudavanmugal, his father’s residence in Thiruvananthapuram. He attended Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thiruvananthapuram, and graduated from Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram, with a Bachelor of Commerce. Mohanlal’s first role was as a sixth-grader in the play Computer Boy, in which he portrayed an elderly individual of ninety years.

In 1977 and 1978, he was the state wrestling champion of Kerala.

Mohanlal Career

Thiranottam was Mohanlal’s first film, released in 1978. In 1980, the character of the antagonist in Manjil Virinja Pookkal was his breakthrough role. Mohanlal appeared in more than 25 feature films in 1983. In 1984, with Priyadarshan’s directorial debut Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, he expanded into comedic roles. He recorded his first tune in 1985 for the movie Onnanam Kunnil. In 1986, Mohanlal collaborated with Sathyan Anthikad on T. P. Balagopalan M.A., for which he received his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor.

Then, he portrayed a crime boss in the blockbuster film Rajavinte Makan. Due to his roles in Priyadarshan’s films such as Chithram and Kilukkam, Mohanlal became prominent among teenage moviegoers. The film Thoovanathumbikal brought him success. He received a Special Jury Award for his work on the film Kireedam. The following year, he won the National Award for Best Actor for the film Bharatham. During the 1990s, he appeared in films including His Highness Abdullah, Midhunam, and Minnaram. One of Mohanlal’s most successful films was Devaasuram, written by Ranjith and directed by I. V. Sasi. Aaram Thamburan, Narasimham, Ravanaprabhu, and Naran are examples of films that have been criticised for their lack of realism and focus on Mohanlal.

He received his second National Award for Best Actor for his performance in the Indo-French film Vaanaprastham. The film was also approved for the Cannes Film Festival’s competitive section. In 2000, the film Narasimham became one of the highest-grossing films in Malayalam cinema history. He won the IIFA Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor for his debut Bollywood film, Company (2002).

Awards

In a career that has spanned close to four decades, Mohanlal has received numerous competitive and honorific awards, including five National Film Awards, nine Kerala State Film Awards, and Filmfare Awards South. For his contributions to the arts, the Government of India awarded him Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, in 2001 and Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian accolade, in 2019. In 2010, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, and in 2018, from the University of Calicut.

Mohanlal expressed interest in joining the Territorial Army of India while filming the 2008 film Kurukshetra, in which he portrays an Indian Army officer. However, he was ineligible, as males older than 42 are not permitted to join the volunteer force. On 9 July 2008, then-Army Chief Deepak Kapoor formally inducted him into the Territorial Army with the honorary title of lieutenant colonel. He is the first actor to earn this distinction. In 2012, Kukkiwon, South Korea, conferred upon him the honorary rank of black belt in taekwondo. He is the first South Indian actor to receive this distinction.
