Nikola Tesla Biography: Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Austrian Empire (present-day Croatia). As an American-Siberian inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist, he is best known for his contribution to the modern alternating current electricity supply system design. Tesla’s mother, Djuka Mandic, inspired him to become an inventor and engineer because she frequently constructed home-made tools and mechanical devices and had an extraordinary memory, able to memorise Serbian epic poetry.
Nikola Tesla Birthday
Brilliant inventions and contributions to contemporary technology have made Nikola Tesla a household name. Tesla was born in Smiljan, modern-day Croatia, on July 10, 1856. Tesla attended secondary school in Karlovac in 1870, where his physics teacher’s demonstrations of electricity sparked his interest in electricity.
In 1882, Tesla began working for the Continental Edison Company as a member of the division responsible for implementing residential lighting systems. He gained experience in electrical engineering and even created enhanced versions of generator dynamos and motors. Tesla relocated to the United States in 1884 to work for Edison’s New York Division. In the same year, Tesla departed the company and began patenting an arc lighting system. He founded Tesla Electric Light and Manufacturing with the assistance of financial investors in 1885. However, the venture was short-lived, and in 1887 Tesla founded the Tesla Electric Company. In the latter part of that year, Tesla created an induction motor that operated on alternating currents, a system that was gaining popularity in Europe and the United States. In 1888, the design was patented and sold to George Westinghouse for $60,000. After learning about Heinrich Hertz’s experiments demonstrating the existence of electromagnetic radiation in 1889, he began working on radio transmissions in 1901, competing with Guglielmo Marconi to be the first to transmit radio signals around the world. Tesla devoted the remainder of his fortune attempting to improve the design after losing to Marconi. Tesla believed that remaining a bachelor throughout his entire existence helped him develop his scientific abilities. He was extremely antisocial and worked the majority of the time. He claimed that he never slept longer than two hours per night, preferring to work on his inventions. Tesla perished in 1943 at the age of 86 of coronary thrombosis.
